A Journey of Vision
The life of Agha Hasan Abedi up to the creation of BCCI in 1972.
Early Life in Lucknow
Born on 14 May in Lucknow, Abedi was raised in a cultured Muslim environment shaped by the refined literary and intellectual traditions of North India. Lucknow was a “civilizational atmosphere” that left a lasting mark on his etiquette and spirituality.
University Years
Earning a Master’s in English Literature and studying Law at Lucknow University, Abedi was shaped by philosophy and legal reasoning. This background allowed him to later speak not just as a businessman, but as a moral thinker.
Migration to Pakistan
Following the partition of India, Abedi moved to the young nation of Pakistan. He was part of a generation of talent driven to build institutional systems and pathways for a new national infrastructure.
Entry into Banking
Joining Habib Bank Limited, Abedi began his education in finance. He quickly grasped that banking was a strategic force in state formation, connected to trade, development, and migration.
Founding of UBL
Abedi founded United Bank Limited (UBL) and became its first President. Under his stewardship, UBL grew rapidly, proving that a bank from Pakistan could compete and act on an international scale.
Strategic Foresight
Recognizing the oil boom, Abedi built deep relationships in the UAE, notably with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He became a trusted adviser, connecting Pakistani experience with Gulf capital.
A “Third World” Bank
Abedi envisioned an institution that would serve the developing world across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, challenging the Western monopoly on global finance and promoting dignity for emerging nations.
The Creation of BCCI
The Bank of Credit and Commerce International was born in Luxembourg. It was the culmination of Abedi’s journey—an instrument of reach and possibility for the Global South.
